Cause and Effect Essay: Illegal Immigration in the USA

imigration essay example

The cause and effect of immigration vary tremendously depending on certain circumstances and situations, but slightly chance once the immigration classification is changed to an illegal one instead of a legal one. Though there is much debate surrounding immigration reform, the cause and effect can be horrendous. To begin, the cause of illegal immigration must be evaluated first, and then the effect that it has in the United States of America.

Illegal Immigrant Qualifications

  • A person becomes an illegal immigrant through three very different ways:
Being a “Non-Immigrant Visa Overstayer”, which means that they have stayed in the USA longer than their visa has allowed them to do so.
  • Have not entered the country legally at the border, which includes the Mexican border, for example, and have successfully avoided going through the Immigration Inspectors and Border Patrol checkpoints.
  • Through violation of the terms that are set for legal entry.

Through violation of any of the following, a person who enters the country against those terms and laws that are set, are considered to be an illegal immigrant, or illegal alien.

Fraudulent Visa

Obtaining a visa on a false pretense is one of the most popular causes when it comes to illegal immigration. For example, “green card marriages” are conducted to ensure that an immigrant has safe entry into a country, being the USA as the most popular destination, marries the sponsor of the visa, and then go his or her separate way.

However, if a foreign national marries for the purpose of avoiding the set immigration laws, which is a crime in the United States, the card will be revoked and said immigrant will be deported. These frauds grant someone who could not otherwise enter and live in the country permanent residency and citizenship, potentially, through the virtue of the laws which allow the spouses of American citizens, as well as those who are in fact permanent residents, to obtain a proper visa.

Common green card marriages include the following listed below:

  • Exploitation of the immigrant by their American partner, which includes human trafficking.
  • A mail-order bride arrangement of any sort.
  • An arranged marriage through a fraudulent purpose.
  • American residency is paid through a specific arrangement.
  • Immigrants who plan on tricking an American citizen into believing that the marriage is genuine in order to gain a green card successfully.

The Cause of Illegal Immigration to the USA

As previously stated, before one can go over the effect that illegal immigration has on the USA, the causes must be evaluated to answer the question as to why illegal aliens, such as Mexican illegal aliens, are either crossing the border or staying over the limit of their visa.

Poverty in Their Home Country

While certain economic models are evaluated through income and overall wealth properties between the destination and within the home country itself, these circumstances are not generally implicated when an illegal immigrant is impoverished based on standards that are seen from the country that they are leaving.

Poor classes in countries that are developing may, and do, lack necessary resources that are needed in order to make an illegal cross successfully, which also include family and friend connections in the country of destination.

For example, those who are crossing from the Mexican border into the US border illegally generally already have family, friends, or some fort of a connection within the USA. This can also be said for those who are looking for work over the US border if there is none in Mexico.

The Liberalization of Trade

Developing states have recently pursued the benefits that come with globalization through the joint agreements that are involved with liberalizing trades. However, the spitfire openings through domestic markets have lead to the displacement of major numbers of unskilled or agricultural workers. These workers tend to seek employment, as well as a better quality of life, through illegal emigration, which turns into illegal immigration into the US.

Overpopulation of the Home Country

While not always the case, overpopulation of the home country is another major cause for illegal immigration into the US. Population growth that exceeds the mass carrying capacity for a specific environment will result in total overpopulation, with spikes in the human population able to cause a water crisis, poverty, pollution, etc. In Mexico alone the population has boomed to 107 million in 2007 from 13.6 million during the 1900’s, which is why Mexican illegal immigrants are more common.

The Effect of Illegal Immigration into the USA

The effect when it comes to illegal immigration into the USA is far worse than the cause may be, even if it’s because they are escaping poverty, when looked at the economical structure of how it affects the country, and its people.

The Taxpayers Are Hurt

FAIR, otherwise known as the Federation for American Immigrant Reform, had the following statement to say during 2011 within their article, “The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration of the United States Taxpayers”, which makes perfect sense on the topic:

“Illegal immigration costs U.S. taxpayers about $113 billion a year at the federal, state and local level… The annual outlay that illegal aliens cost U.S. taxpayers is an average amount per native-headed household of $1,117… Education for the children of illegal aliens constitutes the single largest cost to taxpayers, at an annual price tag of nearly $52 billion…

At the federal level, about one-third of outlays are matched by tax collections from illegal aliens. At the state and local level, an average of less than 5 percent of the public costs associated with illegal immigration is recouped through taxes collected from illegal aliens. Most illegal aliens do not pay income taxes. Among those who do, much of the revenues collected are refunded to the illegal aliens when they file tax returns…”

The Cause and Effect of Illegal Immigration in the USA

Though sometimes illegal immigrants have fair enough reason to enter and reside in the USA illegally, it is clear that they are harming the economy through the after effects of the initial cause.
